The format decides what your barcode can hold and where it will be accepted. CODE128 is the general-purpose choice: it encodes letters, digits, and symbols with no fixed length, which makes it right for internal use — asset tags, shelf locations, work orders, container labels, anything where you invent the numbering yourself.

EAN-13, EAN-8, and UPC-A are retail formats with fixed lengths and a check digit, and they only hold digits. Use them when a product is going to be scanned at a till, and only with numbers issued to you by GS1 — a made-up EAN may scan perfectly on your desk and still be rejected or collide with someone else's product in a retailer's system.

CODE39 is older, less dense, and limited to uppercase letters, digits, and a few symbols. It survives because some logistics, automotive, and defence systems still expect it. If nothing in your process requires it, CODE128 does the same job in less space.

EAN-13, EAN-8, and UPC-A end in a check digit calculated from the digits before it. Its job is to make scanning errors detectable: change one digit anywhere and the arithmetic stops working, so a scanner can tell a misread from a real code rather than silently returning the wrong product.

That is why the generator validates each line before producing anything. A 13-digit number is not automatically a valid EAN-13 — the final digit has to match the checksum of the first twelve. Lines that fail are reported back to you rather than turned into a barcode that scans as something unintended or does not scan at all.

The failure mode this prevents is expensive and quiet. An invalid code printed onto a few thousand labels usually is not discovered on the print run; it is discovered at a till, or in a warehouse, after the labels are already applied to stock.

Bulk generation takes one format and a list of values, one per line, and produces a barcode for each. Everything is rendered in your browser — the values never leave your machine unless you explicitly choose to save them to your account — and you get a single zip back rather than downloading images one at a time.

The zip includes a manifest that maps each file back to the value it encodes. That matters at volume: a folder of a hundred images named after slugified values is hard to reconcile with the source list by eye, and the manifest gives you a column to join on when you drop the artwork into a label template.

For a run of a few hundred labels this replaces the usual routine of generating codes one at a time, renaming files by hand, and hoping the order survived. Paste the list, download the zip, and the naming is consistent by construction.
