Frequently asked questions

Is the QR code generator free?

Yes — completely. All features including colors, gradients, logo overlay, frames, dot styles, and every download format are free with no account required.

Are my QR codes stored on your servers?

No. Every QR code is generated directly in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing you encode — URLs, WiFi passwords, contact details — is ever sent to or stored on ShareText servers.

What can I encode in a QR code?

URLs, plain text (up to 150 characters), WiFi credentials (SSID + password), email addresses with subject and body, SMS messages, phone numbers, and full vCard contact cards with name, phone, email, organisation, and website.

Will my QR code still scan with a logo or heavy styling?

Yes. QR codes have built-in error correction. At H level (30% redundancy), a logo covering up to 30% of the code area leaves the code fully scannable. The generator automatically switches to H level when you add a logo.

What file formats can I download?

PNG (1200 × 1200 px, print-ready), SVG (resolution-independent, ideal for large-format print), and PDF (embeddable in documents, brochures, and packaging).

How do I create a QR code for a restaurant menu?

Select the URL type, paste your online menu link, customise the colours to match your brand, optionally add your logo and a "Scan for menu" frame label, then download as PNG or SVG for printing.

How do I make a QR code for a business card?

Choose the vCard type, fill in your name, phone number, email, organisation, and website, then customise the design and download. Anyone who scans the code can save your details directly to their contacts.

Can I track how many times my QR code is scanned?

Yes. When you save a URL QR code, turn on "Make it a Dynamic QR". The code then routes through a ShareText short link that counts every scan — and lets you change the destination later. Open your QR codes dashboard to see total scans, device type, country, and scans over the last 30 days for each tracked code.

Can I generate many QR codes at once?

Yes. Sign in and open the bulk generator, paste your URLs one per line, and ShareText creates a QR code for each — then download them all in a single zip with a manifest mapping every file to its URL. You can optionally save and track the whole batch.

Can I change where a QR code points after printing it?

Yes, for tracked (dynamic) QR codes. A tracked code encodes a ShareText short link rather than the destination directly, so you can repoint it to a new URL anytime from your dashboard — the printed code stays the same and the change is live instantly. Static (untracked) codes encode the URL directly and cannot be changed after printing.

What is the difference between a static and dynamic QR code?

Static QR codes encode the destination directly — they work forever but cannot be changed after printing. Dynamic (tracked) QR codes encode a short redirect URL, so ShareText can count each scan, show analytics, and let you change the destination after the code is printed.

How long does a QR code last?

Static QR codes last forever — there is no expiry. Because the data is encoded in the pattern itself, the code continues to work even if ShareText were to shut down.

Can I use these QR codes commercially?

Yes. QR codes you generate on ShareText are yours to use for any purpose — personal, commercial, or otherwise — with no attribution required.
